The number of academies has continued to grow as we approach the end of 2011. Overall, there were 1,463 academies open as of 1st December, alongside another 220 which have applied for this status.
According to the Department for Education (DfE) figures, academies appeared to be more popular in the south of England. While there are 260 academies in the South West, 209 in the South East, 212 in London and 222 in the Eastern region, there are only 40 in the North East and 122 in the East Midlands.
Underachieving schools are also benefiting from this growth spurt by working in partnership with outstanding ones to achieve academy status. By being part of a multi-academy chain they can gain the skills and expertise required to raise standards at a faster rate.
There are now 319 sponsored academies, and schools which achieved academy status early on are becoming sponsors.
The Schools Minister Lord Hill said: “I am particularly pleased that through the academies programme some of our best head teachers are reaching out to other schools, working with them to raise standards for local children.
“The best way of improving schools is by getting professionals who have already done an excellent job to spread their expertise.”
