Market Deeping in Peterborough is an ancient town with a triangular market place, nestling beside the River Welland. The Wednesday market that gave the town its name has been held since at least 1220 and is unusual in that it is run by a co-operative of market traders.
The town is known for its stone buildings and coaching inns, many dating back to the 17th century, which reflect its importance as a major stopping place on the London to Lincoln stage route. The mainly 15th century church of St Guthlac has two distinctive sundials on its tower.
Today Market Deeping has a population of just over 6,000. It lies within the South Kesteven District Council area, but also has its own active town council and offers residents and visitors a good range of shops, including an Antique and Craft Market and cafes.
