HM Revenue & Customs now carrying out PAYE tax investigations remotely

Recent reports suggest that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has begun carrying out PAYE investigations remotely.

The investigation is understood to begin with a phone call from HMRC, inviting the employer to complete a survey sent by email. There is concern amongst accountants that the wording of some of these questions could trip up unwary employers and prompt full-scale tax enquiries.

HMRC have wide-ranging powers when carrying out tax investigations and are becoming increasingly litigious.

Our team of tax and payroll experts can help ensure that payroll is fully compliant. If you or your clients receive a call relating to a PAYE or other HMRC tax investigation, please contact our experts for professional advice before you return any information to HMRC.
