Making the most of your finances – now and in the future

New data released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has revealed that the agricultural sector has the lowest levels of participation in the government’s workplace pension scheme.

The figures from the DWP show that only 26 per cent of those in the agricultural sector used a workplace pension scheme between 2012 and 2014, much lower than other sectors such as administration, where 83 per cent of employees have a workplace pension.

Under the scheme, employers must enrol their employees into a workplace pension if they are aged between 22 and the State Pension age and are earning more than £10,000 per year.

The scheme, introduced in 2012, began with the enrolment of the UK’s largest employers before moving on to include medium-sized businesses.

It is now expected that a further 1.8 million smaller employers will need to automatically enrol their workers by 2018, starting with employers that have fewer than 50 members of staff.

While many farming business may not have met their staging date yet, it is important that they comply with the workplace pension rules and ensure all eligible staff are signed up by their auto enrolment deadline.
