Self-assessment deadline looms

Midnight 31 January 2016 marks the deadline for submitting self-assessment tax returns online.

Those registered for the facility will be filing for the financial year 14-15.

The same deadline is in place for paying any tax owed.

Penalties normally apply for late submissions, although appeals can be made providing taxpayers meet certain criteria.

Paper tax returns may still be submitted by 31 January for those who are trustees of a registered pension scheme or a non-resident company. These cannot be sent online.
