RAU to provide £3,000 annual bursary for students
By Andrew Heskin, Partner and ARA specialist
The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has launched a new annual bursary for students looking to get involved in the agricultural industry.
Kaleb Cooper, star of popular TV show, Clarkson’s Farm, has helped launch the bursary at the Royal Agricultural University.
The bursary, which totals £3,000 annually, aims to assist students in navigating the various routes to a career in agriculture. Cooper, widely recognised as Jeremy Clarkson’s sidekick in the TV series, is an enthusiastic advocate for the UK’s farming industry and the opportunities it offers to the youth.
In his words at the bursary launch held at the university in Cirencester, Cooper emphasised, “Promoting agriculture among young people has always been a cause close to my heart. This bursary is a significant step, as it supports those seeking an agricultural career or struggling to break into farming.”
A unique feature of this bursary is the potential for a work placement with Cooper or one of his industry affiliates. This could take place during the course or as an interim year experience.
Starting in September, the bursary is accessible to all RAU undergraduates residing in the UK. The first recipient will be announced in early 2024.
RAU’s vice-chancellor, Professor Peter McCaffery, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a delight to have Kaleb’s support for RAU students through this bursary. His passion for
farming, evident in Clarkson’s Farm, has surely contributed to a greater public awareness of agriculture. This bursary will provide the chosen student with the opportunity to pursue their agricultural ambitions, just like Kaleb.”
The initiative also aims to reach out to students without a farming or agricultural background. Cooper himself, who does not come from a farming background, believes agriculture can be a rewarding career for anyone. Encouraging these individuals to apply, he said, “Agriculture should be accessible to everyone. If you’re facing financial constraints or are entirely new to farming, don’t hesitate to apply.”
