Upsurge in tractor sales led by arable farmers

By Andrew Heskin, Partner and ARA specialist

The number of new tractor registrations in the arable farming sector has seen a significant upturn in the first quarter of 2023, driven primarily by demand for larger models.

According to the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), 3,354 new tractors were registered in the first three months of the year, marking a 10 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2022.

One of the key trends observed during this period is the increased demand for tractors with over 160 horsepower (hp), with registrations up by an impressive 48 per cent compared to the previous year.

In contrast, registrations of tractors with 101hp to 160hp experienced a decline of more than 20 per cent.

The majority of UK regions saw growth in tractor registrations, with the notable exceptions of the Northwest, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The largest increases were recorded in Eastern England, the Northeast, and the Southeast – regions.
