£1 billion Government grant could see business costs cut and roads cleaned up

Cleaner roads could be coming soon, thanks to an announced £1 billion boost for British businesses.

New grants are being introduced to enable businesses to transition away from high-emission vehicles so that they can better address their ESG goals.

It is important to understand how the grants work and whether your business stands to benefit from them.

What grants are going to help businesses with vehicle costs?

With the combined might of the Zero Emissions Truck and Van grants and the Depot Charging Scheme (DCS), businesses could be in a stronger position to make a green transition.

At the moment, well-meaning businesses can be discouraged due to the steepness of upfront costs, even as long-term savings stand to justify a level of investment.

The new scheme will aim to address this, as it will be possible to get savings of up to £81,000 off the heaviest zero-emissions trucks, something that could cover up to 40 per cent of the cost.

Similarly, the van grant will continue to offer discounts of up to £5,000 off the cost of electric vans.

This will be paired with provisions to offset the costs of installing the infrastructure required to make a low or zero-emission fleet viable.

The Depot Charging Scheme ensures that businesses can save up to £1 million, or approximately 70 per cent of the cost, of installing charging infrastructure for vans, coaches and eHGVs.

Combined, these provisions may empower businesses to take the necessary first steps towards achieving green goals.

How can grants help businesses achieve ESG goals?

While these grants and schemes are focused on vans and similar vehicles, the message should be apparent to businesses considering the most effective way to approach ESG goals.

Understanding the scope of grants can be the key to breaking down barriers so that sustainability can become a core part of a business, rather than something that has to be shoehorned in when funds allow.

Seeking sustainability through grant funding can often dispel concerns around greenwashing, as grants will often require a genuine commitment to a cause before funds are awarded.
