Government grants available to help improve electric vehicle capabilities
Are you a small or medium sized company (SME) analysing the costs of installing electric vehicle charging points?
There is support available via the Government’s electric vehicle infrastructure grant (EV) for staffs and fleets which helps you with the costs of installing electric vehicle charge points and supporting infrastructure for your staff and fleet.
Should you be eligible, the grant covers 75 per cent of the cost of the work, up to a maximum of £15,000.
What you get from the EV grant
The EV infrastructure grant is an incentive that takes money off your wider building and installation costs that are required to install charge point sockets. It helps your company save and incentivise SMEs to accommodate employees using electric vehicles.
Should your business be eligible, you can get up to £350 per charge point socket installed and up to £500 per parking space enabled with the supporting infrastructure.
Depending on how many sites you are looking to improve, you may receive up to five grants across five different sites.
The eligibility criteria
There is a strict eligibility criterion in place that you must meet.
The property must be in the UK, and you must either own it or have legal right to it. The charge points can only be used by the building’s staff and vehicles with members of public are not permitted to use them.
As part of the works, you must install at least one charge point and work needs to be carried out on at least five parking spaces, so they either have charge points in place or will in the future.
In addition to this, your works must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer.
You must carry out effective risk assessments and procedures in place to assess potential fire risks and act should your risk assessment find any cause for concern.
Your company must be registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC and have a maximum of 249 employees.
Other important factors to consider
You will not be eligible for the EV Infrastructure grant if the installation of charge points is a mandatory requirement.
They can be a mandatory requirement if a planning application has a condition mandating charge point installations.
In addition to this, If the property in question is under construction where the Part S Regulations applies, this would be classed as mandatory installations of electric vehicle charge points.
Applications close in March 2026
The EV Infrastructure grant application window opened in April 2022, but time is running out for businesses to apply as applications will close on 31 March 2026.
To begin the application process, you must create an account on the OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoints Grant portal and follow the steps from there.
Once you’ve created your account, your installer will follow the next steps, claiming the grant on your behalf once the installation work is complete and OZEV will notify you via email to review the claim.
If your claim is approved by OZEV, the grant will be paid to your installer who will take the amount off your bill.
