Government powers up UK gaming industry with almost £30 million funding boost

The next generation of video game developers is being given access to a new £28.5 million funding stream as part of the Government’s wider Creative Industries Sector Plan.

More than 2,000 gaming companies exist in the UK, from some of the largest studios to much smaller indie developers. They employ thousands, which is why the Government has launched the Games Growth Package.

Open for applications from 14 April, this new grant funding stream is designed to help newly-formed and expanding developers as they turn their ideas into reality.

Grants from the UK Games Fund have been split into three streams:

  • Entry Track – Grants of up to £20,000 available to newly formed companies with limited track records but strong potential for growth.
  • Emergent Track – Grants of up to £100,000 for prototyping new games.
  • Expansion Track – Grants of up to £250,000 available to take games forward to completion and enable studios to scale up.

This new funding follows on from further investment into the sector from the British Business Bank and the UKRI research body.
