Severn Trent Launches Latest Environmental Protection Scheme

Severn Trent has launched its application window for its latest Environmental Protection Scheme (STEPS), which provides funds to help farmers protect the local environment, local water courses and improve farm infrastructure.

The scheme has been designed to provide support for farmers and improve the overall water quality.

The funding initiative is part of Severn Trent’s Farming 4 Water Catchment Management Programme. It is solely funded by Severn Trent, but they work with farmers as well as local wildlife, river and woodland trusts.

For over a decade and with over £10 million invested, the scheme has been hugely successful and Severn Trent remains keen on offering fresh opportunities to work closely with the agricultural sector.

What are the core objectives of STEPS?

Severn Trent has outlined six core objectives that not only have their own specifications for farmers to follow but also give farmers the opportunity to showcase their ideas and how they will boost their farm while supporting the improvements in water quality.

The six core objectives are:

  • Improve soil health
  • Improve soil structure
  • Protect watercourses
  • Apply in the right place, right time
  • Keep soil and nutrients in the field
  • Work in harmony with livestock

The objectives open doors to collaborating with Severn Trent in a variety of different ways, but all share the same goal of improving your farm facilities and safeguarding the quality of water in the UK.

What you need to know before applying

If you are considering an application, you need to be actively farming land, have a farm or be in a priority catchment in the Severn Trent region.

In addition to this, it’s important that you know that Severn Trent is continuing to focus on priority catchment areas. There are specific requirements for these areas, so you need to check this.

You should also have a clear plan for how you want to improve your farm and water quality, and ensure it aligns with an existing objective and an area’s specific requirements.

Each priority area will include indicators as to which is the best approach and most beneficial for it, making it easier for you to assess if your plans match Severn Trent’s indicators and support needs.

Doing this will allow Severn Trent to assess your application and give you a better chance of being successful in your bid to receive a grant.

Important to plan before applying

If you are considering applying, you need to be sure your plan aligns with the core objectives and that you have the necessary funds to support, alongside an additional grant.
